The origin and cooking method of tempura

2025-07-04

One of the classic Japanese dishes is tempura.

Tempura is a dish made by coating various ingredients with tempura batter and then deep-frying them.

It is said that the origin of tempura was around the 15th century, around the same time that guns and Christianity were introduced to Portugal.

When tempura was first introduced, oil was still a high-end commodity, so it was considered a high-end dish. However, after entering the Edo period, the production of oil increased, and it became a common dish that the general public could easily enjoy. In recent years, it has been combined with sushi and soba dishes to become the "Edo Three Flavors" and has become a local dish of Tokyo (Edo). Depending on the region, the ingredients used and the cooking methods are different, and there are also various ways to eat it. In addition, the number of tempura recipes used in each family and restaurant has increased year by year, and it is a home-cooked dish that allows people to enjoy various new ways of eating.

Making tempura is not too difficult. Put eggs, tempura flour and water in a bowl to make a batter, then coat vegetables, fish and other ingredients with the batter and fry them.

The oil temperature is about 180℃. If you see the batter peeling off slightly and floating on the oil surface, it is done! To avoid oil spraying during cooking, carefully remove the water before putting it into the pan, then dip it slightly in tempura flour and slowly put it into the pan when the oil temperature is appropriate. Frying time is about 50 seconds. Make sure the batter is cooked, remove the excess oil and then serve!

Tempura flour can generally be paired with shrimp, various seasonal vegetables, chicken and fish. Putting tempura on rice and pouring sauce on it is also a popular menu for Japanese people. In addition, tempura is also placed on udon noodles or soba noodles, such as fried shrimp tempura, fried assorted vegetables are classic additional dishes for ordering noodles.
